A librarian suggested this book and said “I don’t know if this book is too old for Newbery consideration, but it would really make for good discussion!!”
I certainly agree! (And I would LOVE to have been able to take the High School Really Modern Literature class which is run by a librarian who prefers "books by authors who are still alive.")

A friend of mine recommended this book. She writes: “Katz does a great job of working with rhythm, rhyme and patterns. I especially like the title poem. I would love for others to read it and share their comments.”

I was not as bothered by the obvious lead-in to the next book, but perhaps that was because I knew from the title that this was the first in a series. I don’t believe there are any listed criteria for this award that prohibit a book in a series from consideration, however, I agree that titles we are considering for the Mock Newbery should still be able to be viewed as complete entities in and of themselves. Even with the cliffhanger ending, I think this book CAN be read as a stand-alone title.
Other opinions?

I really enjoyed Gentle's Holler; I found it to be a very believable story. I enjoyed the honest portrayal of a family that truly cared for each other. I also thought the characters were clearly delineated and carefully drawn. A children's librarian I had the pleasure of working with for several years just alerted me to an online interview with this author. Because the Konigsburg book will not be released until September, I've taken it off our second reading list and replaced it with one of *my* favorite books of the year: Laura Vaccaro Seeger's Dog and Bear: Two Friends, Three Stories. You can expect to see The Mysterious Edge of the Heroic World by E.L. Konigsburg title on the September list!

Thirteen participants discussed the books Saturday afternoon (January 8) and selected (through several series of balloting) Nancy Farmer's _The Sea of Trolls_ as our 2005 Mock Newbery Award winner.
Norse mythology, strong characterization, adventure, coming-of-age themes, and humor are just a few of the elements that were mentioned during our discussion.
We would love to read any comments you would like to add about this book.
Sincerely,
Teresa

This is an incredibly POWERFUL book! I found myself drawn into David & Malcolm's friendship as they struggled to understand/cope with the intense racism of 1950's Tennessee. Though the author is well-know for picture books, this book is most assuredly for the older range of the Newbery readership. Has anyone else read it? What did you think?

Emma-Jean Lazarus Fell Out of a Tree by Lauren Tarshis is a book I hope everyone gets to read before our discussion. Emma-Jean is a uniquely lovable character. Her growth and development as a character is undeniable, the descriptions of her 7th grade classmates are great, and the images of her homelife are memorable. Both Emma-Jean and this book are very strange.
Strange adj. 4. extraordinary, remarkable, singular.

This sequel to Gentle's Holler is a beautiful story of strength and determination. Set in the 1960's in the North Carolina mountains, I loved reading more about the family. With daddy recovering -- more slowly than anyone would like -- from a car accident, the family has profound financial problems. But the book is much more than a typical "problem novel." The setting is so very clear that I was totally taken into the time period and mountain life.
I think this book should be on our mock reading list, but I'd love to hear comments from others... particularly those who have not yet read the first book in the series. Does this book stand alone?

Using a perfect voice for the main character, 8 year-old Amy Rossi, this is the story of Amy's life with her father the year after the unexpected death of her mom. Beautifully written -- and at times heart-wrenching -- I believe this short chapter book belongs on our list of titles to be discussed for the 2008 Mock Newbery.

Subtitled The Best Dog in Vietnam, this is another book that I think needs to be on our discussion list. It is a great "coming of age" story on several different levels.
Be prepared for tears... Twenty pages from the end, I put the book down and didn't think I'd be able to read any more of this story; I was too emotionally invested. I finally forced myself to pick it back up and finish the book. Some might think the ending unrealistic, but I loved[/i][/b] it.
I'd love to hear comments from the rest of you.

I just finished The Mysterious Benedict Society and think it absolutely must be on our Mock Newbery reading list this year. A great mystery novel for the upper elementary level reader, it features strong characters, marvelous logic puzzles, and a compelling plot line. I especially enjoyed the 4 distinct (child) characters who worked together as a team to save the world. I'd love to hear what others think of this book.
