Has anyone had a chance to read this new title which has also been published in 2006 by Kate DiCamillo? I am pleased to say that this story involves animals again......I have not read it yet, but I have read a short review, suggesting that the book is suitable for children aged 6-8 years of age.
More interesting discussions about Di Camillo to come!! ;D

I just read this series installment and I enjoyed it. I also enjoyed last year's Mercy Watson to the Rescue. BUT...neither of these was the book that I had hoped for. They are fun and charming, but I don't think that they are in the same league as "Winn-Dixie". The titles may involve an animal, but this is an animal with human traits - she likes to drive, she likes hot buttered toast and she knows how to cause trouble!

I agree. This book certainly is not on the same level (writing or subject) as Because of Winn-Dixie. Yes, Mercy Watson is a pig that drives, eats toast and knows how to cause trouble. This sounds like me, and I'm human....even though because of my name, many may think that I am a race horse! I think DiCamillo does a great job with this easy reader of creating a likable character in a series.

Mercy Watson does absolutely nothing for me, and I generally like Kate's books. I can't see how anyone can sustain a series of books on a pig whose only talent is a love of buttered toast. Sorry, Kate!

I'm not a fan of Mercy Watson. I've read a few. I enjoy the happy endings, and the page numbers inside pieces of toast. But, the stories lack something.

I like Mercy Watson books because they are super fun. The illustrations are a riot and the books are laugh out loud funny. Are they Newberry contenders? Not a chance.

I feel the need to leap to the defense.
"Mercy Watson" titles are early readers. Read silently, I might agree with the above posts. However, after a couple pages, I backtracked and began reading the first title aloud.

(Sorry, I sent before I finished my thought.)

Perhaps, this series is more appropriate for the new Giesel award.

Cathy - I think you have a point! You might want to post your comments about this book, and other possible Geisel contenders, on our Mock Geisel discussion board: acplmockseuss.proboards54.com/

I am really pleased that this book has been recognized as a Giesel Honor book!
