Picture books don't normally get nominated for the Newbery, but I would make an exception for this book. This short book about an Arab girl going with her class to pick apples on her second day of school in America is a real gem. She cannot speak the language and wonders how she will fit in. The book has been getting starred reviews, and with good reason. As lovely as Ted Lewin's pistures are, it is Eve Buntings beautiful, sensitive prose that make the book shine.

Can we put this book on both lists? The illustrations were wonderful. But mostly, the story can ease the stress of being a new and different student in school. Our school is well diversified and "One Green Apple" would be a great addition to our "Caring Community" courses. Thank you for nominating this book.

This is a beautiful story and the illustrations are nicely done. I think the useage of lightness and darkness in the illustrations fits the story line very well. I don't feel the illustrations could tell the story without the words though and this is a key point of the Caldecott award as I understand it. The words and illustrations need each other in order for the message of this beautiful story to come through completely to the reader in my opinion. I don't see why it couldn't be a possible Newbery title.
