It is hard not to consider a book by E L Konigsburg for the Newbery Medal, but I have to say I was not entirely impressed by this book.
While I liked the story line, I struggled with the characters. Some characters will be familiar to those who read 19 Schuyler Place, like Peter VanderWaal. I, unfortunately, have not read that book and had a little trouble understanding his character, especially during an outburst he had.
I never did discover Mrs. Zender's voice. Was she southern? Was she aristocratic? Was she European? Perhaps that is part of her own struggle, after all we only see 10% of what people really are.

I thought the title really went well with the book. It certainly was at the mysterious edge of several stories that could have been heroic. I kept wanting to put it down, but thought I should read it just in case I missed something really great. The stories I was most interested in never developed.
