At first I wasn't sure if I thought the idealized town in this book worked. A place where people were accepted as they were. The tall tale aspects of the novel worked for me, though, and I came away thinking a lot about the characters and the ways in which the main character and, we assume, her grandmother found lives with people who cared for them.
White sure has a delightful way with language and description.

I just don't know if I like this book. There are many colorful characters but not enough depth.
I can't believe I'm going to say this, but, I wish there was more tragedy than sweetness. I love happy endings, but if there was more of the "wicked" grandmother (her transformation was too swift) the book would be more exciting.
PS I loved the "cursing" brother's story. It could be relatable and helpful to some.
