I read this book in the spring, loved the story, along with the strong female lead character, Ruba. Set in 1969, Ruba has moved to Mississippi from Haiti, where she had learned 'old magic' from her warrior heritage past. In her new world, she confronts pervasive bigotry, along with strong conformist values preached upon her by her grandmother. When the biggest hurricane in memory approaches the Mississippi coast, Ruba must call upon her magic to protect those dear to her.
Even without the recent tragedy of Hurricane Katrina, this book should be read for the story, and the tensions developed around the strong female lead. In the aftermath of Katrina, it is a very timely read which will give young people a fictional account of a deadly hurricane.
