Defiance is a good book and it definitely touched my heart. I just can't say whether the book is a Newbery winner or not. I loved Pearl and her cow Blossom. Pearl was one of those characters that makes you feel like you can be happy and do the things you love even though there are mean people out there in the world trying to stop you. And, I have to admit some days I need characters like that in my life in order to hang in there and Toby definitely needed a person like Pearl in his life.
I feel like something was missing in the story and I don't know what it is though. I was surprised though after the way Toby's mom had acted earlier in the book that she didn't get upset when Toby stayed all night with Pearl and Blossom.
