I am not a reader of mysteries. Or rather, I am a reluctant reader of mysteries. I would love to hear what others have to say about this book. The author does an interesting job of setting her character up as an independent female during a time period when that was highly uncommon. This book has much to recommend it, but I'm not sure it is Newbery material. I can't say why. The descriptions are well-drawn. The plot is interesting and moves at a nice clip. Could I be biased against mysteries?

Hmm...I liked this book a lot and I'm looking forward to reading the next in the series, but it never occurred to me to consider it a Newbery contender.
The idea of having the main character be the much younger sister of Sherlock Holmes is fun and I enjoyed the fact that she was able to outwit him, however I recall her character as being static. Although she was greatly upset by her mother's disappearance, the experience doesn't seem to have changed her.
